ROCK MOUNTAIN BIGHORN HUNT 2009

After drawing a bighorn tag with only 6 points this year, I finally got one. He scores a little over 150 points and is very symmetrical. Both sides are broomed off and he carries his mass pretty well.

This was the typical ram that we saw while hunting this area. We probably saw 20 rams altogether and I would say that about 3/4 of them were like this ram.

This is the area that we were hunting. It was the Sheep Creek Drainage, just out of Manila by Flaming Gorge. It was full of great views and all kinds of wildlife. Not only did we see Bighorn, but we saw plenty of deer and elk and a few antelope and moose as well. We even saw several Coyotes.

We spotted this ram on sunday and decided that he was ashooter. The picture is thru the spotting scope, but he was about 600 yards a way when we spotted him. I decided that I would make a move on him.

After an hour long stalk, to get to the ridge across from him and the two other rams that were with him, I made a great first shot and hit him right thru the lungs. He only went about 50 yards before he was finished.

Once he was down the work began. We loaded my pack with the cape and all the meat, except for the hind quarters. For those we found a branch and my dad carried them out over his shoulders. This is a great picture.

It was just getting dark when we got to the truck.
This was my pack with the majority of the weight.

It was a great hunt and I enjoyed every second of it. I want to thank my Dad for being there the entire time, and for bustin his butt in getting the ram out to the truck. I also want to thank my wife for being very patient with how much money and time was spent on this "Once in a Lifetime Hunt".
